CH6 Morphology


  • Free Morphemes- Can exist independently eg. sist-assist,resist...
  • Bound Morphemes- Can't not exist independently, should be with a host,and get meaning with prefix or suffix, eg, -ing/-ed/-er/pre-



  • Morpheme is the smallest units in language: eg, algebra has three morphemes/ explanation has four syllables

  • Morphology- how words are constructed out of morphemes or marked via other process,eg, derivational, inflectional, back-formations.

  • Problems in morphological description is, historical influences and the effect of borrowed elements.

  • Lexical (open) class of words- Words which can expend without limitation through  process such as, compounding, derivation, borrowing,etc

  • Functional-Preposition,Article,Conjunction eg, and,but,when,in,that,etc

  • Derivational morpheme- Able to create new words with different parts of speech
  • Inflectional morpheme- Change to form of words, but do not change the parts of speech by adding,eg, s(plural),ing,ed,en,est,er,'s,s.
